On Friday 6th June the nation will recognise the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. There are a variety of ways that you can be part of the commemorations and pay tribute to our veterans while helping to support SSAFA, including the BBC concert and a D-Day charity auction.
BBC D-Day commemoration concert
SSAFA, The Royal British Legion and SkillForce are joining with the BBC to screen a D-Day commemoration concert at The Royal Albert Hall. This special “Friday Night is Music Night” will be presented by Jeremy Vine, Dermot O’Leary and Louise Minchin. The event features music with Vera Lynn, Catherine Jenkins and Seth Lakeman and diaries and readings by a cast of stars led by Patrick Stewart as Winston Churchill. To find out more about this event, please have a look at a recent press release on our website.
While the concert at the Royal Albert Hall has now sold out, cinemas nationwide will be broadcasting the live event, giving you the opportunity to experience it on the big screen. To find a cinema screening near you please visit: http://ddayconcert.com/
Each participating cinema is providing a pair of free tickets for either two veterans or a veteran and a carer. If you know a veteran who might like to attend a screening, please let your local branch know.
You can also watch this event live from home via the BBC red button.
Enjoy the concert overseas
The concert will also be broadcast live to Forces and their families deployed across the globe. British Forces Broadcasting Services (BFBS) will be simulcasting the event, and the programme will be heard on military bases in locations around the world, including Canada, the Falkland Islands, Brunei, across the Middle East and beyond.
Sailors aboard Royal Navy vessels will also have the chance to tune into the UK’s largest concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
D-Day charity auction
In addition to the proceeds from the BBC concert, SSAFA, TRBL and SkillForce will also receive money raised from an online charity auction.
The D-Day 70 Charity Auction is currently underway and will run until 8pm on Sunday 8th June.
A range of exciting items have been kindly donated by a number of organisations including military/aviation artwork from the Aces High gallery, a short break to Normandy, British Airways flights to Paris and a tandem parachute jump with the Red Devils.
