Dealing with military mental illness
If you are a serving person or veteran facing mental health problems, including depression, anxiety or dealing with PTSD, then SSAFA is here to help you feel less alone and also point you to more specialised services.

Our volunteers are experienced at dealing with the practical challenges that can come with mental health issues. We can’t diagnose your problem or offer a counselling service but we can provide support with everyday things while you concentrate on getting treatment.
It might mean help with your finances, such as getting access to the right benefits, or practical assistance, such as a lift to an appointment. If your problems have led to homelessness or problems with your rent then we can help you set up home again. We can also help with costs associated with your treatment such as training and courses. We have previously supported people to buy art and photography equipment for therapy.
Remember that if you’re experiencing mental health problems then in the first instance our volunteers will always signpost you to your GP if you are ex-Forces, and to the Defence Medical Service if you are serving. We are not able to make a contribution towards the cost of your treatment itself.
If you're currently serving, or have served in the UK Armed Forces, you can also call the Combat Stress 24-hour Helpline on 0800 138 1619 to talk about your mental health.
