Chandra came to the UK in 2007, and settled in Reading. After a trip to Nepal to bring his ill wife to the UK, his housing benefit was cut off and he fell into debt. Chandra turned to SSAFA: “A caseworker helped get me back on my feet. I told him about myself, and he said ‘Why don’t you join SSAFA?’. I‘ve been a volunteer caseworker for SSAFA ever since!”
Chandra recently helped a terminally ill veteran return to Nepal to be with his family. He’s also helped SSAFA in Reading set up English language classes: “It’s very beneficial. It helps them find jobs and for many it’s a reunion as they knew each other in the Army years ago.
"I just want to help the Gurkha community effectively. We must make sure the money goes in the right places, so they get the right support from SSAFA.”
