About SSAFA’s Emergency Response Fund (ERF)

Q. What is the ERF?

A. The ERF is a fundraising appeal to support SSAFA’s front-line response to the impact of Covid-19 on serving men and women, veterans and their families.

Q. Why has SSAFA launched this appeal?

A. With the closure of most businesses and resulting social lockdown, many key fundraising events and activities have had to be cancelled or postponed.  This will significantly impact on our ability to raise the income this year that we traditionally rely on to fund our charitable programmes, projects and services.  The ERF fundraising appeal will help ensure that our front-line delivery staff and the assistance provided is able to continue at this critical time and is fully consistent with the charitable objects of the organisation.

Q. What will the ERF pay for?

A. SSAFA’s front-line response is delivered through teams of volunteers and staff who provide support and advice to a wide range of beneficiaries: some serving personnel, many retired and their families.  Last year, SSAFA supported over 85,000 people at personal moments of crisis and vulnerability.  Typically, our front-line services will provide initial support and advice, then refer out to our national network which can follow up with personal casework interventions supplemented by financial and/or welfare assistance.

Q. Can you give some specific examples of the types of support that the ERF will pay for?

A. Our general motto is to provide whatever assistance is needed, for as long as it is needed to ensure the independence and dignity of those who turn to SSAFA for help.  Examples include: -

  • Crisis financial assistance for basic living, heating and warm clothes, as well as paying for bills, rent and food, by distributing vouchers or delivering food parcels.
  • Welfare and emotional help for those who have lost their jobs, are grieving or in crisis.
  • Supporting SSAFA’s dedicated and expert teams of staff and volunteers who run our helplines, frontline welfare services and support SSAFA’s UK-wide network of caseworkers.

Q. How long will the ERF appeal run?

A. The ERF appeal is SSAFA’s response to an unprecedented international crisis.  We cannot know for how long we will need to run the appeal so that we can cover the costs of providing front-line support both now and for the duration of the Covid-19 crisis. Once we are able to resume our normal fundraising activities, we will review the need to continue with the ERF appeal.

Your support is critical at this time so that we can continue helping our older veterans and those other members of the Armed Forces community in need in this unforeseen time.
