My maternal grandfather, Sapper Charles John Coleman (Service Number 65649), enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 30 January 1915, aged 34.
Living in Hendon he possibly joined 510th Field Company, which formed part of ‘immortal 29th Division’ and was deployed to Gallipoli in April 1915, withdrawn to Egypt in February 1916, and then to France in May 1916.
His records were probably amongst those lost in a later fire. He never spoke of his wartime experiences but carried shrapnel in a leg for the rest of his 91 years.
Two photos are attached, one where he is ‘posed’ in tropical kit (left image) and his Royal Engineers cap badge can be seen in the other.
